U.S. historians consider the period between 1865 and 1900 to be the Gilded Age, the term Gilded Age is based on a book title by Mark Twain, the booked satirized society during the period in which there were serious social problems, mostly poverty in cities, but problems were masked by a thin gold gilding as the very rich.
