1. What differences would there be if calcium chloride were substituted for sodium chloride?

2. The household items washing soda and table salt each have one of the chemicals in this experiment as their primary component.



A solution of each was prepared and tested by adding small amounts of the other solutions in this lab to them. The results were:

    Washing soda: No reaction with sodium carbonate, potassium iodide, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride. Bubbles formed with hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. A white precipitate formed with silver nitrate and barium chloride.

    Table Salt: No reaction with barium chloride, sodium carbonate, potassium iodide, sodium sulfate, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and sodium chloride. A white precipitate formed with silver nitrate.
