MicroLesson Three: Be able to explain how the deployment of electricity drove consumerism.
Electricity drove consumerism in a few different ways. First of all, with the invention of the light bulb, stores could be lit and they could stay open longer, so electric light changed the nature of shopping beginning with the lighting of department stores. In addition to store lighting, advertising via electric signage began to drive consumerism and advertising. The third reason that electrification drove consumerism was through the selling of electrical applicances, lights, and various other gadgets. Today we spend billions of dollars on electrical devices from cellphones to toasters.
The main takeaway from this lesson is that electricity drove consumerism by lighting up retail locations, it drove advertising for goods through electric signage, and launched a new market for electrical powered appliances and other hard goods that were electrically powered.
